PSIM Yogyakarta

He played for a side that had grown out of Perserikatan Sepak Raga Mataram, formed in September 1929 and renamed the following year as PSIM took its place among the seven founding members of the Indonesian Football Association.

The Perserikatan title arrived in 1932, when PSIM beat VIJ Jakarta in the final, and for the rest of that decade and into the next the team kept coming close without getting there again, finishing runner-up in 1931, 1939, 1940 and 1943. Supporters know the shirt as Laskar Mataram, though around Yogyakarta it is Parang Biru just as often.

What followed the old amateur era was harder. Relegations through the 1990s wore the club down, and the 2006 earthquake that struck Yogyakarta forced a withdrawal from competition altogether. Marjono captained that 2005 side. The wait ended only in 2024–25, when PSIM won the Liga 2 final against Bhayangkara Presisi Indonesia.

Derby Mataram against Persis Solo carries the old rivalry; the newer one, Derby DIY, is played against PSS Sleman from just outside the city. Somewhere further back, before either name meant anything to a Yogyakarta crowd, a team of footballers first called themselves Perserikatan Sepak Raga Mataram.
