Mannheim's handball club did not grow out of the city itself but was brought to it: in 2002, TSG Kronau and TSV Baden Östringen merged into SG Kronau/Östringen.

The Lions play in yellow and dark blue at the SAParena. Against TVB Stuttgart and Frisch Auf Göppingen, the fixture carries a name of its own, the Baden-Württemberg-Derby, a reminder that the club's rivalries still run through the region it was assembled from.

The trophies came in a short, concentrated run. The EHF European League arrived in 2013, then the club took the German Bundesliga title in back-to-back seasons, 2016 and 2017, adding the DHB-Supercup in both of those years and again in 2018, the same year it lifted the DHB-Pokal for the first time. A second cup followed in 2023.

No player is tied to that era more than Uwe Gensheimer, whose number has been retired by the club he grew up supporting locally before leaving and later returning to lead it through its biggest years.
