The relegation followed years of trouble that had already surfaced in unpaid wages in 2016 and a difficult run from 2020 to 2022, and it landed on a club that, for most of its existence, had no rivals at home at all.
River Atlético Clube took its name, and its original inspiration, from the Argentine River Plate before shortening it, and its first competitive match came in February 1948 against Amarantino, a month before the club was formally admitted to the Piauí football federation. Locals settled on calling the club "O Eterno Campeão" — the Eternal Champion.
The closest River came to breaking out nationally was 2015, when the club reached the final of the Campeonato Brasileiro Série D and finished runner-up, earning promotion to Série C. The rise lasted one season before relegation sent the club back down.
None of that history carries the sting of the derby against Flamengo-PI. The "Rivengo" is Teresina's own fixture with no love lost.
