Robin Hood

The Dr. Ir. Franklin Essed Stadion holds 3,500 people, for a club that has spent most of its history at the top of Surinamese football. Robinhood moved there after decades sharing the André Kamperveen Stadion with S.V. It returned within a season, beating Boma Star 6–4 on aggregate in the promotion playoff.

The club began in 1945 as something closer to a refuge than a football project: Anton Blijd set it up as a recreational side for poorer boys and men in central Paramaribo, and the name came from the club's first chairman, J. Nelom. The motto, "Geen strijd, geen kroon" — no fight, no crown — still fits an institution known locally as Het Volksclub, the people's club.

What that origin produced is a record of 27 national league titles, along with seven SVB Cups and eight President's Cups. Among the players who built that record, Humphrey Mijnals stands apart — voted Surinamese Footballer of the Century in 1999. The rivalry with Transvaal, De Surinaamse Klassieker, has outlasted the shared stadium that once staged it.

Robinhood has since carried that domestic weight into the Caribbean game, winning the CONCACAF Caribbean Shield in 2019 and 2023 and the Caribbean Cup in 2023.
