In April 1978, a Polish handball team stood on a European final court for the only time in its history, and lost. Śląsk Wrocław went down 28:22 to SC Magdeburg in the European Cup final, the peak of a run that had already brought them seven straight Polish championships since 1972, built under coach Bogdan Kowalczyk around Jerzy Klempel, who would go on to take Olympic bronze in 1976 and win the world title twice.

The section traces back to 1955, when Kazimierz Frąszczak founded it inside the parent military club, which is where the nickname Wojskowi — the Military Men — comes from. Between the first Superliga title in 1958 and the last in 1997, the club won the championship fifteen times and the Polish Cup seven, a run of domestic dominance matched by few sides in the sport. Klempel closed the circle himself: after his playing career he returned to coach the 1997 team to what remains the club's most recent Superliga title.

What followed was collapse rather than decline. Debts caught up with the club, and in 2010 the senior team was pulled out of the Superliga altogether, the section effectively wound up. A new team started again in 2011 at the bottom of the pyramid and spent twelve seasons in the Liga Centralna before winning it in 2023–24 and returning to the top flight under president Bartłomiej Koprowski, himself a former player. The stay lasted one season; relegation sent them back down in 2025.

They still play at Hala Orbita, a hall built for 3,000.
