Chrobry Głogów

The Hala Widowiskowo-Sportowa im. Ryszarda Matuszaka w Głogowie takes its name from a man who, together with Henryk Tryka, set the men's handball section in motion back in 1961, and the hall seats 1,300 for handball, up to 1,500 once staff are counted in.

Chrobry did not reach the top division until 1988, and for years after that the club took a more formal shape: registered as an independent handball association in December 1998 and later restructured as a joint-stock company. Recent seasons have looked steadier, with KGHM Polska Miedź backing the project.

The high point remains the 2005/06 season, when Chrobry finished runners-up in the Superliga behind Wisła Płock. That side was built around Bartosz Jurecki at centre back, wearing the captain's armband before a career that took him to SC Magdeburg and to World Championship medals with the Polish national team; his brother Michał also played in Głogów colours. Two years later the club reached the quarter-finals of the EHF Challenge Cup, and it has since returned to European competition, taking part in the group stage of the EHF European League in 2023/24 and 2024/25.

None of that has come with a Polish Cup win, and the club's rivalry has stayed a regional one rather than a national one — matches against Zagłębie Lubin are known locally as the Derby of the Silver Mining Basin, fought out in orange and black inside a hall in a city on the Oder that handball, more than any other sport, has put on the map.
