Burhanettin Basatemür took charge in 2019 and has barely left the touchline since, turning a club that spent two decades in Turkey's lower tiers into one that kept climbing. That year Somaspor beat Bucak Belediye Oğuzhanspor in the play-off final to leave the amateur ranks behind, and the rebrand that followed dropped the old name for good.

The club had been founded in 1984 as Ege Linyitspor, renamed Soma Linyitspor in 1989 once the state coal enterprise TKİ began sponsoring it, a name that tied the team to the lignite pits ringing the town. Promotion in 2019 gave the board reason to cut that link and adopt Somaspor instead, a name meant to belong to the city rather than the mine.

Two seasons later, under Basatemür, they won the 3. Lig's third group, with Kadir Yuttadur's goal doing much of the work in the run-in. President Mustafa Aydın was there for the trophy, and the promotion that followed put Somaspor back in the 2. Lig for the first time in twenty years — the club had last played there between 1993, when they went up through the play-offs as Soma Linyitspor, and 1999. In between came a run to the Turkish Cup semi-finals in 2019-20, ended by Akhisar Belediyespor.

Somaspor still meet Soma Sotesspor whenever the fixture list allows, a derby with no love lost between two clubs from the same small mining town. Both colours, black and white, carry through the stands at the Soma Atatürk Stadyumu, where five thousand seats are usually enough to hold whoever turns up.
