«Steelers»
Six Super Bowl banners hang in Pittsburgh. The Steelers reached the top of the NFL four times in the 1970s, taking Super Bowl IX and X back to back, then adding XIII and XIV before the decade closed. That run belonged to Chuck Noll, who coached the team from 1969 to 1991 and built the "Steel Curtain" defense around Mean Joe Greene and Jack Lambert, with Terry Bradshaw and Franco Harris carrying the offense.
Ten AFC North titles have followed the franchise since the division was formed, most recently in 2025. Long-standing grudges exist against the Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns.
The club has stuck to what people in Pittsburgh call the "Steelers Way" — drafting for character and fit over flash. Art Rooney founded the franchise on 8 July 1933. He called it the Pittsburgh Pirates, sharing a name with the city's baseball club, and it took until 1940 for the team to become the Steelers, a name built for a city built on steel. Black and gold have stayed the colours ever since, even through two wartime seasons when player shortages forced the club into mergers, first with the Philadelphia Eagles as the "Steagles," then with the Chicago Cardinals as Card-Pitt.
