For two seasons, the team that plays out of St. Petersburg was not permitted to use its own name. A trademark dispute with a company called Classic Ink kept the players in FC Tampa Bay shirts from 2010 to 2011. When the Rowdies name returned in 2012, the club won the NASL's Soccer Bowl that same year, beating Minnesota Stars FC on penalties. That result put a second star on the badge, next to the one earned in 1975 by the original Tampa Bay Rowdies — the club this one was founded to succeed.

David Laxer, Andrew Nestor and Hinds Howard set the current club up in 2008. The original club had folded on 31 January 1994, after spells under George Strobridge Jr., a group of local investors, and then Cornelia Corbett.

Petersburg since 2011, with one earlier season, 2010, spent across the bay at George M. Steinbrenner Field. The club reached the USL Championship final in both 2020 and 2021 — regular-season Eastern Conference winners both years — losing the first to Phoenix Rising FC after the pandemic pushed the game back, and the second 3-1 to Orange County SC.
