«Tigers»
That match, the first game of intercollegiate football ever played, is where the Princeton Tigers begin.
Princeton dated its colours to 1867, before the sport itself had a fixed shape. The program counts national titles from that early period through to 1922, with the NCAA recognising fifteen of them. Walter Camp, who played for Princeton in the 1870s and 1880s, went on to be called the father of American football.
The rivalry with Yale carries the weight of that same origin story — two programs that were among the ones inventing the sport now measuring themselves against each other year after year, in what has become one of the oldest fixtures in American football. Dick Kazmaier gave the rivalry one of its landmark seasons when he won the Heisman Trophy in 1951.
