In 1924, a Cleveland side wearing navy blue, red and white took the National Football League championship.
The title sat inside a run of five seasons, 1923 to 1927. Outside that window the record thins out fast: a single season in 1921, before the team had any real shape to speak of, and then one more appearance in 1931, four years after the 1927 side had broken up, before the name disappeared from the league for good.
It was that first, forgotten season in 1921 that set the pattern the club never shook off — fielded, let go, fielded again years later, and then, the last time, not fielded at all.
