Unión Tarija

Unión Tarija grew out of a plaza gathering of friends on 8 April 1980, first registered as Unión Central, and took green for its shirts as a nod to the region's countryside — the choice gave the club its nickname, Verdolaga.

Unpaid wages owed to the player Diego Mosorongo brought a FIFA sanction and, with the finances of Unión Central beyond repair, the club dissolved and was refounded as Unión Tarija on 8 April 2008, the same calendar date as the original founding.

Its one national title came earlier. Unión Tarija went through the 1998 Copa Simón Bolívar unbeaten and won promotion to the Bolivian Primera División for 1999. The top flight held them until 2006, when they lost an indirect relegation playoff to Destroyers FC. Everything else in the trophy cabinet is regional silverware from the Asociación Tarijeña de Fútbol, including three Primera "A" titles, the last of them in 2007 under Gustavo Romanello, the club's all-time leading scorer, back that year as coach rather than forward.

Locally, the fixture that matters is the Clásico Chapaco against Atlético Ciclón. Nationally, Unión Tarija's identity runs through Estadio IV Centenario in the La Pampa district, open since 1950 and holding 15,000 for decades before a 2024 renovation lifted capacity to 16,586 — still the address where Verdolaga's green is watched closest.
