About

The Liga Nacional B operated as Bolivia's second-tier football competition for a brief, defined period between 2011 and 2016. Established by the Asociación Nacional de Fútbol (ANF) and the Liga de Fútbol Profesional Boliviano (LFPB), it replaced the traditional Copa Simón Bolívar with the specific aim of providing a full-year league format for second-division teams, including those relegated from the top flight. The structure differed significantly from its predecessor and the current system, which involves regional qualifiers and a national phase with six groups of four. During its existence, the league featured a variable number of teams, typically ranging from 13 to 15. Participants included departmental champions, relegated top-flight teams, and Copa Bolivia finalists. The competitive format evolved annually. The 2011–12 season utilised two groups leading to a final. Subsequent editions from 2012–13 through 2014–15 employed a round-robin group stage followed by a Hexagonal Final. The 2015–16 campaign introduced groups leading to Quadrangular stages, two-legged semifinals, and a final. Success was distributed among several clubs. Guabirá claimed the title in 2012–13 and 2015–16, making them the most successful side during this era. Petrolero won in 2011–12, Universitario de Pando in 2013–14, and Atlético Ciclón in 2014–15. Victory secured direct promotion to the División Profesional, while the runner-up often contested a playoff. The competition ceased in 2017 when the LFPB withdrew financial support. The ANF reinstated the Copa Simón Bolívar as the second tier, which remains the current structure. The modern iteration involves approximately 66 clubs and has seen recent champions such as ABB and Real Potosí. The Liga Nacional B stands as a distinct experiment in Bolivian football organisation, characterised by its centralised, full-year approach before reverting to the regional model.
