Varnsdorf

The name Ján Koller doesn't sit on most club honours boards, but Varnsdorf has it: the Czech international striker spent the 1994/95 season in the club's shirt at 21. Horst Siegl arrived on the other end of a career, in 2005/06, the record scorer of the Gambrinus Liga era.

Varnsdorf sits close to the German border, and the club there has changed its name almost as often as its fortunes have changed direction. It began in 1938 as SK Hraničáři Varnsdorf, became SK Slovan Varnsdorf in 1996, and took its current name, FK Varnsdorf, in 2011. In between came a bankruptcy in 2003 and a rebuild from 2006 that restored the club to competitive football, though the legal line back to 1938 was never broken.

The club's best modern season came in 2014/15, when it finished second in the National Football League, the country's second tier — close enough to smell the top flight. Promotion never followed: the Městský stadion v Kotlině, did not meet the requirements for Czech first-division football.

A stadium not built for the top division remains the ceiling Varnsdorf has pushed against since 2015, and has yet to find a way past.
