Warta Poznań

Seven hundred and twenty seats is not a typo — it is what remains of Warta Poznań's ground on Droga Dębińska, a pitch small enough that supporters call it Ogródek, "the little garden." The club left it in 2020, when the ground failed licensing requirements for top-flight football, and spent five seasons playing home matches in Grodzisk Wielkopolski before returning for the 2025/26 season. The name on the gate now belongs to a sponsor, but the nickname has outlasted every renaming the club itself went through.

That history of enforced renaming runs deeper than most. In 1949 the communist authorities ordered the club to drop its name for Związkowiec Poznań; a year later it was merged with HCP and became Stal Poznań, relegated from the top division in the process. Warta only got its name back in 1956. The two championships that give the club its standing both came before any of that: 1929, the first Polish football title the club ever won, and 1947, the last one it has won since.

Founded in 1912, Warta is the oldest football club still operating in Poznań, and its rivalry with Lech Poznań — the Derby Poznania — has run against it for decades, with Lech holding the upper hand. The 2010s brought a different kind of threat: in 2014 the club came close to liquidation over its finances. It recovered enough to reach the Ekstraklasa in 2020 after a 25-year absence, only to drop back out in 2024, and again out of the second-tier I Liga in 2025, landing the club back in II Liga.
