Workington

Workington sits on the Cumbrian coast, and for more than a century a football club has carried its name through the leagues below it. The current club dates only to 1921, formed after the original Workington side folded a decade earlier, but the town's football did not start there — that first club had already been playing since 1884.

Borough Park has held 3,101 in red and white ever since, and it was there that the club spent its best years as a Football League side, joining in 1951 and climbing as high as fifth in the Third Division in 1965–66. Bill Shankly managed the club for a single season in the mid-1950s. Relegation from the League came in 1977, and Workington has not been back since, dropping through non-league football to the Northern Premier League's Division One West after leaving the Premier Division in 2024.

The club's best-remembered cup run belongs to the 1963–64 and 1964–65 League Cup campaigns, when a side from outside the top two divisions reached the quarter-finals and put five past Blackburn Rovers along the way. Promotion in 1999, sealed by a Grant Holt goal, remains the clearest marker of the club's non-league era, alongside a string of Cumberland County Cup wins collected across seven decades. Matches against Whitehaven still draw the sharpest edge locally.

Long before any of that, Workington's football began on the same stretch of coast where the club now plays, a line running back to 1884 that the 1921 refounding picked up rather than started.
