About the player
Cristian Volpato came through Sydney's junior ranks, moving from Sydney United to Sydney FC and then Western Sydney Wanderers before AS Roma took him to Italy in January 2020. He made his professional debut for the Serie A club on 4 December 2021 and opened his senior account on 19 February 2022 against Hellas Verona. In 2022–23 he was part of the Roma squad that reached the final of the UEFA Europa League.
That summer, in June 2023, Sassuolo signed him in a deal worth €7.5 million, structured as part of a wider €10 million package that also involved Filippo Missori, with Roma retaining a 15% sell-on clause. He passed 60 league appearances for Sassuolo. When the club won the Serie B title in 2024–25 with 82 points, Volpato contributed 18 appearances and four goals to that campaign.
His international story has taken an unusual turn. Volpato represented Italy at youth level across the Under-19s, Under-20s and Under-21s, scoring at each age group. In May 2026, however, he switched his allegiance to Australia, the country of his birth, and made his senior debut for the Socceroos on 7 June 2026 against Switzerland.
