About the player
Kota Sakurai was the first Japanese player to appear competitively for Toronto FC II. He made two appearances for the reserve side in the USL in 2016, having left Yokohama F. Marinos' youth system for the Toronto FC Academy in Canada.
That same year he played for Toronto FC III in League1 Ontario and was named the league's Young Player of the Year. He stayed with the third team until 2018, while his academy spell ran to 2017.
Sakurai then combined football with university. At Dartmouth College, from 2017 to 2019, he played college soccer and won the Ivy League title in his first year there.
His professional path afterwards took him back to Japan and then across Europe. He spent 2021 and 2022 at Ituano FC Yokohama and played for Ogre United in Latvia in 2023. From there he moved to Lithuania, joining FK TransINVEST for 2024.
The Lithuanian stretch continued at FK Sūduva in 2025. Sakurai made 31 appearances for the club and scored twice.
In March 2026 he signed for Landskrona BoIS on a free transfer.
