Neymar wore this shirt before anyone outside Brazil knew his name, and so did Ronaldinho, Kaká and Romário before him. Founded in 1954, when the Seleção fielded its first youth side and beat Panama 7–1 in its opening match, it trains at Granja Comary in Teresópolis, in the hills above Rio.

Brazil has won the FIFA U-20 World Cup five times, the last of them in 2011, and taken the South American U-20 title thirteen times, most recently in 2025. The gap between those two dates says something about how the team is judged at home. The senior consequence is what actually matters.

The last two Olympic cycles added a different kind of silverware, gold at Rio in 2016 and again in Tokyo, won by a team built on the same age bracket though entered as the under-23s. The 2015 World Cup ended in a final defeat to Serbia; 2023 ended in the group stage. Ramon Menezes was sacked in October 2025 after a group-stage exit at the U-20 World Cup in Chile, and Brazil have gone into this cycle without a head coach in place, the position still open as the next generation waits its turn.
