Beijing is where the Chinese Football Association keeps its offices, and the women's national team keeps returning to the capital for its biggest nights, even though the CFA moves the fixture list around the country as each tournament requires — Shenzhen, Wuhan, Chengdu and Hefei have all hosted it, with the Beijing Workers' Stadium and the Shenzhen Youth Football Training Base among the venues that come up most often.

The team, nicknamed the Steel Roses, was established on 15 December 1983 and lost its first international, 2–1 to the United States, in Jesolo on 20 July 1986. It has since won the AFC Women's Asian Cup nine times, a run stretching from that decade to 2022.

The side built around Sun Wen in the 1990s reached the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup final, where China lost to the United States after Sun Wen had already taken both the Golden Ball and the Golden Boot; she was named FIFA Female Player of the Century the following year. Three years earlier, in Atlanta, the same generation had taken Olympic silver.

Japan and North Korea remain the opponents China measures itself against in Asia, without either meeting carrying a settled derby name. Ante Milicic, appointed in May 2024, took over from Shui Qingxia as head coach — the latest custodian of a team still defined by the defeat in Jesolo that started it all.
