In the final of the 2022 Copa Perú, Deportivo Garcilaso put five past Atlético Bruces and conceded one, a result that ended six decades of trying. The club had reached the finalísima of Peru's promotion tournament before, and lost there: bottom of the group in 1970, bottom again in 1994, third in 1979 behind Sportivo Huracán. The 2022 final was the first time the run went the other way, and it sent the club from Cusco into Liga 1 for the first time in its history.

The club began in 1957 as Club Deportivo Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, set up by Monsignor Publio B. Prada Torres together with teachers at the Gran Unidad Escolar Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. A year later it took on players and the name of Deportivo Lucre, a club founded by the Garmendia brothers, and Deportivo Garcilaso was the name that stuck.

Everything before 2022 was built at departmental and provincial level — 22 titles in the Liga Departamental del Cusco, 20 in the Liga Distrital, spread across decades and mostly invisible outside the region. It is the kind of record that only reads as significant once a club has done something with it, which is what the Copa Perú win did retroactively.

Home games are played at the Estadio Garcilaso de la Vega, rebuilt in 2013 and holding just over 45,000, in the sky-blue colours that give the club its usual nickname, El Vendaval Celeste. Argentine forward Pablo Erustes scored 23 goals across the 2024 and 2025 seasons, enough that the club has called him a point of pride in celeste.

Garcilaso shares its stadium and its city with two rivals it is easy to confuse it with. Cusco FC played for years as Real Garcilaso, a name close enough to cause genuine mix-ups between two separate clubs. Cienciano is the older, sharper rivalry — the Clásico Cusqueño, fought out between two sides from the same ground with no love lost between them.
