Every meeting with FC Imabari carries more weight than the league table suggests. The two share Ehime Prefecture. What grew from that arrangement is the Iyo Battle, and it settled the 2023 J3 League championship: a 1–0 win over Imabari, the goal scored by Riki Matsuda, sent the club back up to J2.

The rise to that title came after a fall. Sixteen straight seasons in J2 ended with relegation to J3 in 2022. It did not last; the club dropped back to J3 in 2026.

Matsuyama Soccer Club took the name Ehime FC in 1995. Promotion to J2 first came in 2006, on the back of a Japan Football League title the year before. The following season produced the club's best-remembered result: away at Urawa Red Diamonds, Ehime won 2–0 in the Emperor's Cup.

Hideto Inoue has stayed through most of it.
