Derby games at the Waldstadion have a second name in Gießen — the "Derby im Waldstadion".

The club itself is a merger. On 1 July 2018 the football department of VfB 1900 Gießen, a side that had already dropped out of the Oberliga Hessen in 2001 under financial strain, joined with SC Teutonia Watzenborn-Steinberg, founded in November 1927, to form FC Gießen. Under the old VfB name, the club had already won the Hessenpokal three times, in 1964, 1972 and 1979, and reached the DFB-Pokal the following season. Its best-known player from that era, Uwe Bein, came back to Gießen for the 1997–98 season carrying a World Cup winner's medal from 1990.

FC Gießen has yo-yoed between the Hessenliga and the Regionalliga Südwest. The club won the Hessenliga in 2018/19 and again in 2023/24, going up to the Regionalliga both times, only to come back down: relegation followed in 2021/22, and again in 2024/25.

That pattern leaves the club back in the Hessenliga.
