That question had followed Les Éléphants since 2006 and 2012, when they reached the final of the Africa Cup of Nations and lost both times to Egypt and to Zambia, each time on penalties after a goalless draw. The final against Nigeria in 2023 (played into 2024) ended 2-1, and it gave the country its third title after 1992 and 2015 — the 1992 and 2015 wins had also gone to a shoot-out, against the same opponent, Ghana, in both finals.
The federation behind them, the Fédération Ivoirienne de Football, was set up in 1960 as the country left French rule, and it joined FIFA four years later.
Ivory Coast now play in Abidjan at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium, which holds 60,000 and replaced the older Félix Houphouët-Boigny ground after 2020. Orange, white and green have stayed the colours throughout, a shorthand for a team whose nickname, the Elephants, points back to the animal that once gave the country its name.
