Boubacar Traoré had already left for Wolverhampton Wanderers by the time Mali went to the 2023 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations. The bronze medal they helped win, secured 4-3 on penalties after a goalless draw with Guinea, did two things at once: it settled a West African derby that both sides had treated as one, and it sent Mali to the Paris 2024 Olympics.

That third place in 2023 stands as the best finish from three appearances at the age-group tournament, in 2015, 2019 and 2023. Guinea and Senegal remain the sides Mali's under-23s measure themselves against most often in African qualifying, and it was against Guinea that the team produced its highest-stakes ninety minutes to date.

The side, nicknamed the Eagles, plays out of the Stade du 26 Mars in Bamako. Long before the AFCON bronze, there was a silver medal at the 1965 All-Africa Games, a result that predates the current age-group set-up by decades and still stands as the team's other notable finish. The team itself was established in 1991, a generation before either of those results bookended its history so far.
