Stade du 26 Mars is defined by its location in Yirimadio and the weight of its history. It sits along National Road 6.

While the official figure sits at 55,000, the atmosphere is shaped by its role as the home of the Mali national team and several Bamako clubs, including Stade Malien and Cercle Olympique de Bamako. The pitch is natural grass, a standard that was enforced after the stadium failed to meet international safety standards in 2021. The subsequent renovation, completed in early 2022, brought modern LED lighting and smart surveillance cameras, built by the China Overseas Engineering Group.

The name itself is a permanent marker of the past. It commemorates the coup d'état of March 26, 1991, which ended the regime of Moussa Traoré, and has never been altered. This political gravity occasionally spills onto the sidelines, as seen when the venue hosted a major rally in February 2019 organized by Muslim leaders to protest a sex education manual. The same site also witnessed a stampede during the annual Maouloud celebrations that year, proving that the stadium is as much a public square for the city as it is a football arena.

On matchdays, the focus shifts to the technical benches and the pitch. The surface can cut up badly under the strain of international qualifiers, such as the encounter against Ghana in June 2024, which drew a crowd of 50,200. The renovation added locker rooms with kitchens and modern facilities, but the true character of the place is found in the way the city uses it—switching between cup football’s own rules and the heavy security required for political gatherings.
