Qatar currently hold the Asian Cup, having become the first side ever to retain the title: a 3-1 win over Japan sealed it in 2019, and they defended it successfully in 2023. At home, 2019 is remembered as the moment the national game arrived — Almoez Ali finished that tournament as both its top scorer and best player, and he has since become the side's all-time leading scorer with 60 goals.

None of that continental form carried over three years later, when Qatar became the first Arab nation to host a World Cup. Playing in front of their own crowd in 2022, the hosts lost to Ecuador, Senegal and the Netherlands in turn and left the group stage as the first World Cup host never to take a single point from the tournament.

The team plays in maroon with a white change kit, colours lifted from the national flag, and goes by the Maroons. The Qatar Football Association has run the game from Doha since 1960. Of the rivalries built up around the side, the fixture against Saudi Arabia carries the most weight off the pitch — supporters call it the Blockade Derby, a nod to the diplomatic rift between the two countries.

Doha's Khalifa International Stadium has served as the team's main home ground since 1976 and holds 45,857; the smaller Jassim bin Hamad Stadium, with room for 15,000, fills in from time to time. It is in Doha, between the two grounds, that the Maroons are watched by their own crowd.
