ROW Rybnik

In the spring of 1975 a reserve side went to a cup final. ROW Rybnik's first team had nothing to do with it — it was the second-string ROW II that battled through to the Polish Cup final that season, held Stal Rzeszów to a goalless draw, and then lost the penalty shoot-out 3:2.

The club that produced it was younger than the ground it played on. ROW Rybnik itself traces back to 1920, but the football section carrying the name KS ROW 1964 only took shape in 1964, when Górnik Rybnik and Górnik Chwałowice were merged into one team. The name has shifted since — Energetyk ROW Rybnik after a 2003 restructuring, then back to KS ROW 1964 in 2015 — but the switch back suggests the older identity was the one people kept using anyway.

Stanisław Sobczyński came through the club and went on to win six caps for Poland, a rare instance of a Rybnik product reaching the national side. On the pitch itself, the club now sits in the fifth-tier IV Liga, a long way down from that 1975 final; the more consistent silverware in Rybnik these days comes from the speedway section, run separately and twelve times Polish champions, a contrast that says something about where the city's football fortunes have settled.

Matches are still played at Stadion MOSiR, built to hold just over 10,000, with plans on the table to push capacity toward 15,000 should the renovation go ahead. Rybnik itself remains a modest Silesian city watching a football club a long way removed from the season it is still remembered for.
