Cernache do Bonjardim is a village in the municipality of Sertã, in the Castelo Branco district. On 1 August 1948 the employees of a local transport company set up Grupo Desportivo Viação de Sernache; a club called Atlético Clube de Sernache had existed in the village since 1924.
Ten years after the founding the club won the district championship and went up to the Second Division, which for a village side meant national football. Between 1964 and 1974 Vitória de Sernache was dormant, suspended over debts owed to the federation, and it took the revolution of 1974 and a group of workers to put the club back together.
Sernache finished top of their group in the Campeonato de Portugal on 55 points, then met Louletano in the final and lost it.
