About the player
Diego Rubio made his senior debut with Colo-Colo in 2010 and scored five goals in his first season in the Chilean Primera División. The following year he moved to Portugal, joining Sporting CP for a fee of €1.5 million, with loan spells at Pandurii Târgu Jiu and Sandnes Ulf along the way.
A transfer to Real Valladolid in August 2015 sent him straight back out on loan, this time to Sporting Kansas City in Major League Soccer, and the move became permanent the following year. He spent further time on loan at Swope Park Rangers before winning the U.S. Open Cup with Sporting Kansas City in 2017. In August 2018 he was named MLS Player of the Month.
In December 2018, Rubio was traded to the Colorado Rapids in exchange for Kelyn Rowe and allocation money. In 2022 he tied the Rapids' single-season scoring record with 16 goals. He signed with Austin FC as a free agent in February 2024.
At international level, Rubio has earned 12 caps for the Chile senior national team. He previously represented Chile at under-20 level, scoring once in eight appearances in 2013.
Rubio arrived at Deportes La Serena in January 2026 on a free transfer from Austin FC, wearing the number 11 shirt.
