Briton Ferry

Old Road never had trouble filling with a name — it filled with two of them. Briton Ferry Athletic and Llansawel had shared the same corner of the town for decades before folding into each other in April 2009, and what plays under the Old Road floodlights now, Briton Ferry Llansawel A.F.C., carries an athletic club's history from 1925.

Most of the honours board belongs to the old Athletic side: two Welsh Football League Division 1 titles, in 1971/72 and again in 1994/95, plus a run of Neath & District League Cups through the 1970s.

One name from the Athletic years travelled further than the rest. Roy John kept goal at Briton Ferry until 1927, then left for Swansea Town and, eventually, Manchester United, Stoke City and Walsall, collecting 14 caps for Wales along the way.
