Penybont

Bryntirion Park sits on Llangewydd Road on a pitch bought with someone else's stadium money: when Bridgend Town sold its old Coychurch Road ground to ASDA, the proceeds paid for the artificial surface that Penybont now plays on. The club itself only exists because two Bridgend sides, Bridgend Town and Bryntirion Athletic, merged in 2013 rather than keep competing for the same crowd. A persistent claim that Penybont was once called Llansantffraid is simply wrong — that is a different club altogether, from the Mid Wales leagues, with no connection here.

What the merger inherited was two separate sets of near-misses. Bridgend Town won the old Welsh Football League Division One twice, in 1968–69 and 1972–73, added the Southern League title in 1979–80 and lifted the Welsh League Cup in 1987–88. Bryntirion Athletic took the Division One title in 2010–11. Under the Penybont name, that same Division One was won again in 2018–19, and the club's best cup run came in 2021–22, when it reached the Welsh Cup final. The nearest anyone connected to the club has come to the Cymru Premier itself was in 2024–25, when Penybont finished runners-up.

The ground has changed its sponsor's name more often than its address, having been known at various points as the SDM Glass Stadium and the KYMCO Stadium before its current DragonBet branding, and it holds somewhere between 1,200 and 1,500 — nowhere near the 3,000 figure that circulates in some general reference sources. The team plays in blue with white trim, a colour scheme that gave rise to the nickname Bont in Blue.

For all that history borrowed from its two predecessors, the club under its own name has never gone all the way: no Welsh League Cup, no Division One title beyond the one in 2018–19, and no Cymru Premier crown to match last season's second-place finish.
