The college itself dates to 1853, but the program's own record begins with that first season.
Central has taken the American Rivers Conference title 32 times, a run stretching from 1939 into the 2020s, and in 1974 that dominance carried the Dutch to the NCAA Division III national championship. Runner-up finishes followed in 1984 and 1988.
The rivalry with Simpson College goes back to 1905 and by 2022 had reached its 101st meeting, Central ahead 68–29–3.
Vern Den Herder came out of that program to spend twelve seasons at defensive end for the Miami Dolphins, winning two Super Bowls, and went into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1996. More recently, quarterback Blaine Hawkins rewrote the Division III record book, throwing 63 touchdown passes in the 2021 season alone and taking home the Gagliardi Trophy for it.
The Dutch now play at Ron and Joyce Schipper Stadium, a 1,000-seat ground that opened in 1977 under a different name, A.N. Kuyper Stadium, before being renamed in 2005.
