«The Birds»
The Eagles play in the NFC East of the National Football League (NFL), and they have won the division in each of the last two seasons, 2024 and 2025. The 2024 title came with a Super Bowl. Quarterback Jalen Hurts was named most valuable player of Super Bowl LIX, and running back Saquon Barkley carried the ball.
The first, Super Bowl LII, followed the 2017 season. Before the Super Bowl existed, the Eagles took NFL Championships in 1948, 1949 and 1960.
The club exists because another one failed. When the Frankford Yellow Jackets went bankrupt, Bert Bell and Lud Wray secured the NFL rights for Philadelphia and founded the Eagles in 1933. The rivalry with the New York Giants dates from that first season. It produced "The Hit" in 1960 and the "Miracle at the Meadowlands" in 1978, a game the Eagles won after the Giants fumbled a snap they should have run out the clock on. Dallas is the other opponent that sharpens the schedule, and the rivalry has been called the "Ancient Rivalry".
For 32 years the Eagles played at Veterans Stadium. Before that they had moved through the Baker Bowl, Shibe Park and Franklin Field. Lincoln Financial Field, which holds 67,594, opened in 2003, and the midnight green of the home side fills it. Supporters call the team "The Birds" or, in the local accent, "The Iggles".
