«Mustangs»
SMU comes into this season as an Atlantic Coast Conference side now, having left the American Athletic Conference behind in July 2024 on the back of a championship year — the Mustangs won the AAC in 2023 before making the jump.
Nothing shapes the club's history like 1987. A pay-for-play scandal brought the NCAA's so-called death penalty down on the program: the entire season cancelled, a three-year television ban, scholarships stripped away. SMU had been a national power before that — three claimed national championships, in 1935, 1981 and 1982, and eleven Southwest Conference titles across six decades.
Doak Walker's Heisman in 1948 still stands as the program's signature individual honour, and the list of Mustangs who went on to the NFL runs through Forrest Gregg, Raymond Berry and Eric Dickerson.
