The Zain Basketball League serves as the premier professional basketball competition in Bahrain. Operated by the Bahrain Basketball Association, the league represents the highest tier of the national sporting pyramid. Its origins date back to 1974, establishing it as a longstanding fixture in regional sport. The format typically combines a round-robin regular season with a postseason playoff stage, where the final determines are decided through best-of-5 series matches. While the number of participating clubs varies, recent iterations have featured six or seven teams, including Al Ahli, Al Hala, Al Ittihad, Al Najma, Al-Manama, and Al-Muharraq. Matches are frequently centralized at a single venue throughout the campaign. Historically, Manama Club stands as the most successful entity, holding 25 titles as of the 2024–25 season. This includes periods of dominance such as seven consecutive titles between 1996 and 2002. Al-Ahli remains the second-most successful club with 20 titles in the league's history. In the 2024–25 season, Al-Muharraq claimed the championship by defeating Al-Ahli 3–2 in the finals. This victory marked a significant shift in the power structure, as the club also secured the 2025–26 title, continuing their momentum. The league operates independently from the Bahraini Premier League, which governs football and is named after Nasser bin Hamad. While the football competition has experienced structural instability, the basketball league has maintained a consistent format with centralized hosting. The exact mechanics for promotion and relegation between the top flight and the Bahraini 1st National League are not publicly documented. The league's identity is closely tied to its corporate sponsorship, distinguishing it from other national competitions in the country.
