Overtime in a continental final rarely turns on a single possession, but in 2001 Al Ittihad found themselves tied with Al Rayyan with the Asian title on the line and God Shammgod running the offence. The game finished 103–101. That afternoon is still the clearest answer to why Jeddah calls this club The Dean: no other side from the kingdom has lifted the FIBA Asia Champions Cup.

The Saudi Premier League tells the same story in longer form. Sixteen championships, stretched from 1996 to 2017, with runs bunched at either end of that spread rather than spaced evenly through it — a club that dominated in flashes, went quiet, then dominated again. Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, the former NBA All-Star, arrived in 2007, well past the club's most decorated stretch, a signing that spoke to ambition more than to need.

Across the city, Al Ahli wait every season for the Jeddah Derby, also known as the Red Sea Derby, and no fixture on the calendar carries more weight for either side. The rivalry sits alongside continental pedigree that few Gulf clubs can match: an Arab Club Basketball Championship in 2004, five Gulf Club titles, ten Alnokhbah Championships. The current squad plays in the Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Basketball Arena, 6,500 seats in yellow and black, and competes in the FIBA West Asia Super League alongside the domestic league.

Underneath all of it sits the club's age. Founded in 1927 as part of the wider Al Ittihad sporting body, it predates every rival in Saudi basketball, and the nickname The Dean was earned rather than chosen — a name for the oldest club in the country, still measuring itself against the standard it set in Jeddah for basketball.
