The Saudi Premier League, officially known as the Saudi Basketball League (SBL), operates as the highest tier of men's basketball in Saudi Arabia. Established in 1976 by the Saudi Arabian Basketball Federation (SBF), it has grown into the central stage for domestic competition. The structure relies on a double round-robin format, ensuring each team plays eighteen games during the regular season. This phase determines which side advances to the playoffs, where the champion is decided.
Ohud Medina holds the record for success within the competition, winning twenty titles. In the most recent cycle, Al-Ittihad secured the crown, following previous victories by Al-Hilal and Al-Ahli. The league serves as the primary pathway for clubs seeking qualification for continental tournaments such as the West Asia Super League. A distinct domestic knockout event, the SBF Cup, runs alongside the league without interfering with its round-robin schedule.
Movement between tiers remains a key feature of the system. The Premier League sits above the First Division, with promotion and relegation occurring annually. Recent changes saw three teams move up from the second tier while three others dropped down. Looking ahead, the competition is set to undergo a significant expansion. Starting with the 2026–2027 season, the league aims to increase its roster to sixteen teams split into two conferences. Currently, the field includes ten clubs, though only a selection participates in the immediate standings.
