NBL (Bulgaria) 2026/27

The National Basketball League stands as the premier tier of professional basketball in Bulgaria. While the championship lineage stretches back to 1942 as the Bulgarian A Division, the modern entity known as the NBL was formed in 2008. This restructuring aimed to professionalise the sport under the governance of the Bulgarian Basketball Federation, which has been active since 1935.

The competition operates with a specific structure designed to determine the national title. A regular season features a double round-robin format, after which the league splits into phases. Teams play a total of 30 games during this period. The top eight sides advance to the playoffs, where the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final are contested as best-of-5 series. A separate best-of-3 series decides the third-place finisher.

Historic dominance is held by Academic Sofia, formerly known as Lukoil Academic. They have secured 26 titles, making them the most successful club in the league’s history. The current reigning champions are Balkan Botevgrad, who claimed the title in the 2025–26 season after defeating Lokomotiv Plovdiv in the final series.

Movement within the Bulgarian basketball pyramid is regulated by the federation. Promotion to the NBL comes through a National Final Tournament involving regional champions from the second-tier B Group. Relegation is less straightforward, often depending on financial licensing rather than purely sporting results. The NBL remains distinct from the Bulgarian Basketball Cup, which runs as a separate knockout tournament.

Records from the pre-2008 era remain continuous with the current league standings. This ensures that historical achievements are preserved within the modern context of the competition.
