The FIBA U16 Asia Cup stands as the premier men's under-16 basketball competition in Asia, organized by FIBA Asia. Founded in 2009, the tournament serves as the primary qualification pathway for the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup, with the top four finishers earning automatic spots. The event brings together national teams from across the continent, including Australia, Bahrain, China, India, Iran, and Japan, among others.
Historically, the competition has seen shifts in dominance. China won the first three editions, while South Korea claimed the title in 2015. Since 2017, Australia has established a strong presence, winning titles in 2017, 2022, 2023, and 2025. The 2019 edition was cancelled due to the pandemic. The format typically involves 16 teams divided into four groups, with a knockout stage that may include play-in games for lower-ranked group finishers to reach the quarterfinals. Unlike the women's counterpart, which utilizes a Division A and Division B structure with promotion, the men's tournament is a single-division event.
The competition is distinct from other Asian basketball events as it is strictly age-restricted (U16) and acts as the continental qualifier for the global U17 World Cup, whereas other senior or U18 tournaments serve different regional or developmental purposes. This focus on youth development highlights its role in nurturing future talent for international competition. The inaugural tournament was held in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, won by China. The ongoing participation of various nations underscores the tournament's significance in Asian basketball.
