About

The FIBA U18 Asia Cup is the premier under-18 basketball competition for men's national teams in Asia. Organized by FIBA Asia, the tournament has a long history dating back to 1970, when the inaugural edition was held in Seoul, South Korea, and won by the Philippines. It sits as the top-tier continental championship for this age group, serving as the primary qualifier for the FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup, with the top four teams earning a spot. The competition is biennial. Historically contested by Asian nations, a major reform occurred in 2018 when FIBA Oceania members Australia and New Zealand joined the tournament, significantly increasing its competitive level. The format has evolved from a 12-team structure to a 16-team format, typically involving group stages followed by knockout rounds. For the 2024 edition in Amman, Jordan, 12 teams competed in four groups of three, with the top teams advancing to quarterfinals. The 2026 edition in Ahmedabad, India, will expand to 16 teams in four groups of four. There is no promotion or relegation system for the men's tournament; it is a single-division event. Qualification is generally based on performance in the FIBA U16 Asia Cup and host nation status. China is the most successful nation with 11 titles, followed by Australia (3 titles, including back-to-back wins in 2024 and 2026) and Iran (3 titles). The current champion is Australia. The tournament is distinct from the FIBA U18 Women's Asia Cup, which utilizes a Division A/Division B structure with promotion and relegation. It is also the primary youth pathway competition in Asia, differing from senior continental championships by focusing on development and World Cup qualification.
