The Coppa Italia di Pallacanestro stands as the premier national knockout competition for professional basketball clubs in Italy. Founded in 1968 by the Federazione Italiana Pallacanestro (FIP), the tournament operates as the primary domestic cup, distinct from league standings and the Supercoppa Italiana. Following the reorganization of Italian basketball, the Lega Basket Serie A (LBA) assumed responsibility for organizing the event.
The current format, established in 2000, utilizes a "Final Eight" structure. This arrangement features the top eight teams from the first half of the Serie A regular season. The tournament unfolds as a single-elimination knockout held over four days, typically in February, at a rotating host city. While the quarterfinals are played at the home arena of the higher-seeded team, the semifinals and final take place at a neutral venue. There is no promotion or relegation associated with the cup; it remains a standalone honour.
Victory in the competition grants the winning club the right to wear the "Tricolore Coccarda" tricolor badge on their jersey in the following season. Additionally, the winners qualify for the Supercoppa Italiana against the Serie A champion. Historically, the competition experienced a hiatus between 1975 and 1983. The format evolved from a traditional knockout to a Final Four in 1990 before expanding to the Final Eight in 2000. Notable reforms include the shift to a rotating host club system in 2007.
Olimpia Milano holds the record for the most titles with nine, followed by Virtus Bologna and Pallacanestro Treviso with eight each. Mens Sana Siena possesses three confirmed titles, having had two others revoked due to financial crimes. Recent winners include Napoli in 2024, Trento in 2025, and Olimpia Milano in 2026. The highest-scoring final in the modern era occurred when Dinamo Sassari faced Olimpia Milano in 2015. The Supercoppa Italiana differs by featuring only the league and cup champions in a Final Four format, usually held before the season starts.
