About

Serie A1 Women stands as the premier tier of Italian women’s basketball. Officially known as the Lega Basket Femminile, the competition sits at the apex of the national pyramid, governed by the Italian Basketball Federation (FIP). While the first national championship took place in 1924 under the FIAF, the league itself was founded in 1930.

The season structure relies on a single round-robin format involving between eleven and twelve teams. This regular phase determines access to the post-season, where the top eight squads advance to decide the title. The knockout stages begin with quarter-finals played over three games, while the semi-finals and final are contested as best-of-five series. The outcome of these matches crowns the champion, a position currently held by Famila Schio following their victory over Reyer Venezia in the previous campaign.

Relegation is managed through play-offs for the lower-ranked teams or direct descent for the final places, with promotion available from Serie A2. Historically, Pool Comense, now part of the Geas Basket lineage, holds the record for success with fifteen titles. Significant developments include the 1980-81 split into A1 and A2 divisions and Taranto Cras Basket’s achievement of a treble in 2002-03.

Organisationally, the league operates independently from the men’s Serie A, managed by its own federation body rather than the Lega Basket Serie A. This separation extends to sponsorship arrangements and squad sizes, with the women’s division maintaining a smaller footprint than its male counterpart. The competition maintains an official presence online at legabasketfemminile.it.
