The FIBA U16 Women's AmeriCup is the premier continental competition for girls' national basketball teams in the Americas. Running since 2009, it operates on a biennial cycle and serves as the primary qualification pathway for the FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup, with the top four finishers securing automatic entry to the global event.
Compared to its founding in Mexico City, the tournament has expanded its geographic footprint. The current structure brings together eight teams split into two groups of four for a round-robin stage. The leading sides from each group progress to a knockout phase that includes quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals, alongside classification matches for fifth through eighth place. A recent shift in qualification rules allows established federations to bypass regional qualifiers based on historical rankings.
United States holds a commanding record in the competition, claiming eight titles from nine editions. Their dominance is highlighted by five straight victories leading up to the 2025 season. The only exception occurred in 2015 when Canada secured the crown with a narrow overtime win against the Americans. In the most recent edition held in Irapuato, Mexico, the United States defeated Canada 85–59 in the final to claim their eighth title.
The tournament also features strong participation from nations such as Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Panama, and Puerto Rico. While European youth championships often display balanced competitive structures, this event is characterised by the overwhelming influence of North American powers, particularly the United States. Notable individual performances include a 138-point scoring output by the United States against Puerto Rico in 2025, which set a new tournament scoring record.
