About

The FIBA U16 Women's Asia Cup stands as the premier biennial competition for national teams of female players under the age of 16 in Asia. Organised by the governing body FIBA Asia, the tournament serves as the primary developmental platform for young athletes in the region. It functions as the qualifying event for the FIBA Under-17 Women's Basketball World Cup, with the top four teams securing a spot at the global stage.

A significant structural shift occurred in 2017 when the event was divided into two tiers: Division A and Division B. Each division accommodates up to eight teams. Teams in Division A play a group stage followed by knockout semi-finals and finals. Division B mirrors this format. Promotion and relegation connect the two levels. The champion of Division B moves up to Division A, while the last-placed team in Division A drops down.

Australia leads the historical record with four titles, including victories in 2017, 2022, 2023, and 2025. China follows with three wins, achieved in 2009, 2013, and 2015. Japan secured one title in 2011. The 2025 final saw Australia defeat New Zealand to retain the crown. The inaugural edition took place in Pune, India, in 2009. The 2019 edition was cancelled due to the pandemic.

The competition sits below the U18 and Senior levels in the regional basketball pyramid. It focuses specifically on younger athletes rather than the older cohorts found in the U18 counterpart. Participants include nations such as China, Chinese Taipei, Japan, New Zealand, Samoa, and Australia. The tournament provides a clear pathway for development before players advance to higher age groups.
