About

The FIBA U16 Women's Asia Cup Division B operates as the second tier of the continental youth pyramid for women's basketball in Asia. It provides a competitive platform for developing nations, sitting below the elite Division A which features established powerhouses such as Australia and China. The structure allows FIBA Asia to manage its growing membership by offering tiered opportunities for emerging programs in the region.

The tournament was established in 2009 as the inaugural continental championship, with the first edition held in Pune, India. A significant structural shift occurred in 2017 when the competition was reorganised into two distinct divisions following the inclusion of Australia and New Zealand in the broader Asian framework. This change created a specific pathway for nations seeking to develop their youth infrastructure while maintaining a clear separation between the highest level of play and the developmental tier.

The format typically involves eight teams split into two groups of four. Participants play a single round-robin schedule within their groups. The top side from each group advances directly to the semi-finals, while the second and third-place teams contest crossover matches to determine the remaining finalists. Classification games decide places five through eight. Crucially, the winner of Division B earns promotion to Division A for the subsequent edition, with relegation applied to the bottom-placed teams in the top tier.

Historical success in this division has been shared among several nations. India has claimed titles in 2017 and 2025, while Jordan secured victories in 2021 and 2022. Samoa won in 2022, and the Philippines took the crown in 2023. The 2019 edition was cancelled due to the pandemic, and the 2018 tournament was not held. The competition designates a champion each year based on final standings, providing a tangible goal for participating federations aiming to elevate their status within the Asian basketball landscape.
