Ankara D.S.I. claimed a 88-82 victory over OGM Ormanspor in the Turkish Basketball League on Friday evening. The hosts finished ahead despite sitting 12th in the table, while the visitors arrived from fifth place with a far stronger record. By then the result had already shifted expectations for both clubs.
The home side carried 14 wins from 34 matches, a tally that left them well outside the upper half. OGM Ormanspor, by contrast, had accumulated 22 victories and sat comfortably in the top five. Two teams with such different trajectories met on the court and produced something unexpected.
We had backed the visitors at 53 per cent confidence before the match began. The prediction did not come true, and what broke it was simply the home side's willingness to play without fear. Ankara refused to let the visitors dictate the tempo.
Recent form offered little hint of this outcome. Ankara had lost four of their five previous fixtures, including a heavy 77-89 defeat to Büyükçekmece Basketbol. OGM Ormanspor had also stumbled recently, falling to Göztepe 73-85 and losing narrowly to Büyükçekmece 75-83. Both sides arrived tired and uncertain.
The gap between the two teams in the standings has now closed in practical terms. A home win of six points does not move Ankara into contention, but it removes the air from OGM Ormanspor's confidence. The visitors will need to respond before the next round.
