Ettore Messina to Advise Atlanta Hawks
The 66-year-old Italian joins the Hawks as a consultant, reuniting with head coach Quin Snyder, his former CSKA Moscow assistant, months after leaving Milan.
Ettore Messina is heading back into the NBA, this time as a consultant. The 66-year-old Italian will join the Atlanta Hawks in an advisory capacity, La Repubblica reported, with Sports.ru relaying the news.
The role does not require him to be based in the United States. Messina will keep working as a television analyst in Italy alongside the consultancy work for Atlanta.
In Atlanta he reunites with head coach Quin Snyder, who served as his assistant at CSKA Moscow. The move comes three months after Messina stepped down as an adviser at Milan, a club he had previously coached to three Italian championships, two national cups and three Super Cups.
His CSKA spell brought two EuroLeague titles and five Russian championships. He has already worked in the NBA before, on the coaching staffs of the Lakers and the San Antonio Spurs.
The Hawks themselves are currently 8th in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, without a win in four games. Messina's advisory brief is unlikely to touch that fringe competition directly, but it places him back inside a franchise now led by a coach he once mentored.
