Mitchell Robinson missed his welcome press conference at the Celtics on Tuesday after his brother was hit by a car that morning.
The 28-year-old centre, who signed with Boston this off-season after winning the championship with the Knicks, was due to be introduced alongside fellow newcomers Paul George and Mike Conley. The club said Robinson was absent for a personal reason.
Robinson later posted a video appealing to followers on social media.
"I need a huge favour. I want you all to write to my brother and pray for him. Yesterday, around 6am, he was hit by a car. He asked me himself to record a video, because he's been reading the comments and apparently sees what people are writing," Robinson said.
It is not clear whether the brother involved in Tuesday's incident is the same one referred to in an earlier episode. Before last season's NBA Finals, Robinson had surgery on the little finger of his right hand, with no explanation given at the time; he went on to play all five games of the series against San Antonio. After the Knicks' title win, he said the injury had come from punching his own car on learning that his brother had been in a road accident.
