Celtics president Brad Stevens says he sees no ceiling for the team, calling the 14-man rotation the deepest group he has built despite roster constraints.
Brad Stevens has offered no complaints about the roster the Celtics head into the season with, describing the group as one of the deepest he has put together as team president.
"It'll sound evasive, but I always say it this way. I don't see a ceiling on this team's potential. I really like this roster. We have a smart, versatile, genuinely deep team. Fourteen rotation players and a couple of two-way contracts, and every one of them can affect the result. About five years ago we already started thinking about how to gain an edge on the margins. Our picks sit at the tail end of the first round of the draft. We have no room to use full exceptions. We have no room to pay free agents. We have to work with two-way contracts and minimum deals and hope some of them hit. All we can do is admire the players, their work ethic and the coaching staff's work. We managed to put together a genuinely deep group. That's what it takes to win in this era. We think the current roster has a lot of strengths, we'll assess it in the early stages and keep pushing. Now we have a bit more assets to work with," Stevens said.
Stevens's remarks are the clearest public defence yet of the roster left behind by that turnover.
